Relatives visit 1985 JAL crash site

Some 200 relatives of people killed in the 1985 Japan Airlines jumbo jet crash visited the accident site on the morning of Aug. 12 at Osutaka Ridge in Ueno, Gunma Prefecture, to commemorate the 520 victims on the 23rd anniversary of the tragedy.

The relatives followed a makeshift path as the road to the crash site has been closed due to landslides.

JAL President Haruka Nishimatsu also visited the site and offered a silent prayer.

The worst single-aircraft accident in aviation history killed all but four of the 524 passengers and crew members aboard the Boeing 747, which was en route from Tokyo to Osaka.
