Rents paid to Ozawa's fund body
The fund management body of main opposition Democratic Party of Japan President Ichiro Ozawa earned ¥9.8 million in rents from two Tokyo apartment units in possible violation of the Political Funds Control Law, according to political fund reports filed by the group.
The law limits investments of political funds and assets to only a few areas including bank savings and the purchase of government bonds, and receiving rents could constitute a violation of the law if property is rented for speculative investment purposes, said an official of the Internal Affairs and Communications Ministry.
DPJ Secretary General Yukio Hatoyama told media Oct. 9 that Ozawa "had no intention of eking out a profit from the rents and there was no problem with the deed.
