Kimura bid-rigging trial starts
Prosecutors demanded July 2 that former Wakayama Gov. Yoshiki Kimura be sentenced to four years in prison and forfeit ¥10 million for taking an equal amount in bribes and helping to rig the bids for three prefectural public-works projects in 2004.
Kimura, who was arrested in November, has pleaded guilty but said he was only indirectly involved in the corruption and that he received the money as election campaign funds.
He is charged with receiving the ¥10 million in cash from former golf course operator Yoshikazu Iyama in June 2004, prior to his re-election in return for enabling Iyama to arrange bids for projects ordered by the prefecture.
Kimura is also accused of rigging bids in November 2004.
