Pension computer crashes amid turmoil

The Social Insurance Agency tried to determine June 11 what caused a computer glitch at 130 pension insurance offices nationwide the day before that made it impossible for staff to respond to inquiries from people seeking confirmation and advice about their account data.

Defects in the host computer programs are believed to have brought about the trouble, agency officials said. The glitches occurred amid increasing criticism of the agency over blunders in keeping track of data on millions of pension accounts.

Also June 11, the agency's new toll-free around-the-clock telephone consultation service was flooded with calls after it opened at 8:30 a.m. The problem hit computers June 10 at 130 offices in 23 prefectures, including Kanagawa, Hyogo and Fukuoka.
