Abe, Prodi agree to cooperate
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and visiting Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi agreed April 16 to promote further cooperation in the fields of security and defense, assistance for Afghan reconstruction and dealing with the North Korean nuclear standoff, the leaders said.
With Japan and Italy to chair the Group of Eight in 2008 and 2009 respectively, the two leaders also discussed cooperation on tackling climate change, assistance for African economic development and other global issues, they said in a joint news conference afterward.
"Japan and Italy agree to engage in reconstruction assistance for Afghanistan," Abe said.
