Chinese premier makes state visit

China's premier visited Japan for the first time in seven years April 11 in a sign that ties may be stabilizing after years of rancor over Tokyo's World War II-era aggression.

Expectations for the visit were mixed, yet the fact Premier Wen Jiabao visited reflects a sharp turnaround in relations that began with an ice-breaking visit to Beijing by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe last October.

"I feel strongly that my trip has a real mission," Wen told Japanese reporters in Beijing ahead of the three-day visit. "Sino-Japanese relations are at a critical stage and both countries should make an effort to push forward ties."
