The Nagoya District Court gave suspended prison terms March 30 to four of five prison officers accused of taking part in assaults on inmates at Nagoya Prison that killed one man and left another seriously injured.
A fifth defendant was found not guilty.
Akihiko Maeda, 45, was sentenced to three years in jail, suspended for five years. Takashi Watanabe, 39, and Hiroki Ozawa, 31, were both sentenced to two years in prison, suspended for three years, and Hajime Ikeda, 34, to one year, also suspended for three years.
The judge cleared Takao Sato, 29, of the charges, saying he "joined in believing that he was conducting official duties."
