Four killed in GSDF helicopter crash
A Ground Self-Defense Force helicopter crashed March 30 on Tokunoshima Island, Okinawa Prefecture, killing all four crew, police said after the wreckage was found March 31.
The GSDF identified the four crew members as the pilot, Maj. Yoshitomo Tatemura, 54, the copilot, Capt. Hirokazu Sakaguchi, 53, Sgt. 1st Class Koichi Iwanaga, 42, and Sgt. 1st Class Shinji Fujinaga, 33.
The CH-47 transport helicopter had flown out of Naha, Okinawa Prefecture, in response to an emergency call from a hospital in Tokunoshima to transfer a patient. It went missing shortly before its scheduled arrival on the island.
