Mayoral elections kick off
Mayoral candidates in Hiroshima, Sapporo, Shizuoka and Hamamatsu kicked off their campaigns for the April 8 elections March 25, as local quadrennial elections got into gear in a prelude to the House of Councilors election in July.
In Hiroshima, incumbent Tadatoshi Akiba, who is seeking a third four-year term and has the backing of the Democratic Party of Japan and other opposition parties, is facing three challengers, including former Liberal Democratic Party Upper House member Takeaki Kashimura,
Sapporo Mayor Fumio Ueda, backed by the DPJ and the Social Democratic Party, is seeking a second term in a three-man race.
In Shizuoka and Hamamatsu, both in Shizuoka Prefecture, incumbents Zenkichi Kojima, 59, and Yasuyuki Kitawaki, respectively, are seeking re-election.
