Celebrated animator Hayao Miyazaki will return to the big screen in 2008 with an original story featuring a goldfish named Ponyo who wants to become human, and a 5-year-old boy named Sosuke, film company Toho Co. said March 19.
Miyazaki's last movie, Howl's Moving Castle, premiered in Japan in November 2004 and won the Osella award for outstanding technical contributions at the Venice Film Festival that year.
Titled Gake no ue no Ponyo (Ponyo on the cliff top), Miyazaki came up with the idea while staying in a town on the Seto Inland Sea and began developing the graphics last October.
