Warmest winter recorded

Japan had its warmest winter on record, according to data that have been kept since 1899.

In 75 of the nation's 153 weather observation points, the just-ended winter registered the highest average temperatures ever observed between December and February, according to the Meteorological Agency.

This winter's average temperatures were 1.52 C above the average between 1971 and 2000 at 17 observation points where long-term temperature changes have been monitored.
