The Democratic Party of Japan, the nation's largest opposition party, has decided to back former Miyagi Gov. Shiro Asano's bid to become Tokyo governor by not fielding its own candidate.
DPJ President Ichiro Ozawa approved the decision March 5.
"Backing Mr. Asano is an important step to putting an end to (Gov. Shintaro) Ishihara's tenure," Ozawa told reporters at DPJ headquarters in Tokyo after consulting the party's senior members at its Tokyo chapter.
Asano, a 59-year-old Keio University professor who has vowed to run as an independent even with backing from political parties, formally announced his candidacy March 7.
