Defense Minister Fumio Kyuma denied Feb. 20 that his earlier remarks critical of U.S. defense policy constitute the reason he would not meet with U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney during his visit to Japan, saying it was a matter of rank.
During his three-day visit from Feb. 20, Cheney held talks separately with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Foreign Minister Taro Aso and Chief Cabinet Secretary Yasuhisa Shiozaki and discussed a wide range of issues, including defense-related topics.
