Osaka punishes 163 over slush funds
The Osaka Prefectural Government announced punishments Feb. 20 for 163 officials in connection with a slush-fund scandal that dates back to 1997, dismissing three in disgrace for embezzling public money and withholding Gov. Fusae Ota's pay for one month.
The number of Osaka municipal officials facing disciplinary discharge over the slush-fund scandals now stands at seven.
In 1997, a total of about ¥1.3 billion in slush funds was found in the prefecture. The municipal government ordered this to be repaid in January 1998. But about ¥1 million in cash was found in the prefecture last December -- money believed to be unreturned slush funds.
