Prosecutors arrested the president of meat wholesaler Narita Foods Co. on Feb. 6 on suspicion of evading some ¥5.9 billion in tariffs that are imposed on low-priced pork imports to protect domestic producers.
Masaaki Tanabe, 60, president of the company based in Kashiwa, Chiba Prefecture, is suspected of overstating the import prices of pork from Denmark between January 2004 and February 2005 so as to evade the tariffs on low-cost imports in violation of the customs law, according to sources close to the investigation.
