Mount Fuji and four other sites were formally placed on Japan's shortlist of nominees Jan. 29 for UNESCO World Heritage sites at a meeting of officials from relevant government offices on the World Heritage Convention.
The list was presented to the U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization on Feb. 1. The government expects the candidate sites to be formally included on the provisional list after UNESCO approves them in its World Heritage Committee meeting in June.
