Okayama bird flu confirmed H5 The highly virulent H5 family of avian flu virus has been confirmed at a poultry farm in Okayama Prefecture, where dozens of birds had recently died, the agriculture ministry said Jan. 29. This was the seventh outbreak of avian flu in Japan and the third this year if outbreaks of the H5N1 strain reported earlier in January at two farms 60 km apart in Miyazaki Prefecture are confirmed to be separate cases. The other four cases were between 2004 and 2005. The ministry said further laboratory work will be conducted at the National Institute of Animal Health to determine how virulent the latest virus find is.
