Kikuchi nominated for Oscar
Actress Rinko Kikuchi was nominated Jan. 23 for a best supporting actress Oscar in the 79th Annual Academy Awards, while the films Letters from Iwo Jima and Babel that featured several notable Japanese actors were also nominated for best picture.

The awards will be presented on Feb. 25. Kikuchi was nominated for her role as a deaf-mute high school student in Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's Babel, a film about families on three continents linked by a shooting in Morocco.
"I am honored," said Kikuchi, who is now visiting Paris, after the nomination was announced.
"I am very happy to receive news like this in Paris. This will be a really good present for my parents. I hope to see everyone on the day" the award winners are announced.
