Emperor recites New Year poem Emperor Akihito, in a poem he recited Jan. 15 at the annual New Year Poetry Reading at the Imperial Palace, reflected on the white moon he saw as he hurried home from his duties on a recent night. The moon was this year's theme for the waka (poetry) reading. Compositions by the Emperor, other members of the Imperial family and 10 poems chosen from among 23,737 entries submitted by the public were recited.
