The leader of the largest opposition Democratic Party pledged Jan. 16 to steer his party to victory over Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's ruling bloc in July's House of Councilors election.
Ichiro Ozawa made the promise at a plenary session on the second day of the DPJ's two-day annual convention taking place before this year's ordinary Diet session convening Jan. 25, with several hundred participants including about 200 DPJ lawmakers.
The participants are set to adopt a policy platform aimed at seeing the governing coalition lose its majority in the Upper House, leading the Abe administration to dissolve the more powerful House of Representatives for a general election, and winning the Lower House race to gain a grip on power.
