Fujiya Co. President Rintaro Fujii said Jan. 15 he will resign to take the blame for the major confectioner's shipment of cream puffs and other products made from old ingredients.
Fujiya admitted the same day that it has made cakes with milk, cream, eggs and other ingredients past their expiry dates in 18 cases over the past seven years at its factory in Saitama Prefecture.
Two of the 18 cases involved subordinates acting on the instructions of their supervisors.
Separately, the company admitted that bacteria levels exceeding standards were detected in products made between mid-May and late July last year at its Sapporo factory.
