Fewer travelers during holidays
The Japan Railway group's passenger railways saw a slight decline in the number of riders on bullet trains and conventional express trains during the yearend and New Year's holiday season.
The six railways carried 8.88 million travelers during the eight days from Dec. 28 to Jan. 4, a decline of 33,000 from last year. It was the first year-on-year drop in seven years.
During the first three days of January, 460,000 people got off at Harajuku and Yoyogi stations in Tokyo. Both stations are close to Meiji Shrine, the most popular shrine among New Year's visitors.
