Toyota third in U.S. auto sales
Toyota Motor Corp. took third place in U.S. auto sales in 2006, moving into the top three for the first time on an annual basis by passing the North American division of DaimlerChrysler AG, according to automakers' data released Jan. 3.
General Motors Corp. remained at the top and Ford Motor Co. retained second place, the figures showed.
While the U.S. Big Three suffered sales falls as gasoline prices soared, Toyota and Honda Motor Co. posted record sales as their fuel-efficient small and compact vehicles attracted customers.
Toyota appears set to overtake Ford in terms of annual sales in 2007 to seize second place in the U.S. market.
