Teachers and school boards are covering up bullying incidents among students and a policy review is needed, the education minister said Nov. 26, following recent bullying-related teenage suicides.
Schools reporting no cases of bullying tend to be regarded as good schools, but that trend has encouraged teachers and education officials to suppress such incidents, Education Minister Bunmei Ibuki said on NHK.
"Everyone wants to be seen doing a good job, so teachers would hide bullying and education boards would not report bullying," Ibuki said. "Good teachers are those who recognize and deal with bullying well. We need a little change in the way we make evaluations."
