Missile defense policy to be reviewed
Japan may reconsider a government pledge not to use its missile defense system to aid allies, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yasuhisa Shiozaki said Nov. 20.
A 2003 government statement said Japan's missile defense system cannot be used to defend another country, in deference to the country's post-World War II pacifist constitution.
"We will discuss where the statement's intentions lie. Whether to review the statement or not will depend on those discussions," Shiozaki said.
Tokyo and Washington agreed to speed up the development of Japan's missile defense system in Japan at the APEC summit in Vietnam on Nov. 18.
