Dominican emigrants law passed
The Diet passed legislation Nov. 14 to compensate Japanese who emigrated to the Dominican Republic after World War II under a Tokyo government program that gave exaggerated promises of fertile land.
Lawmakers unanimously passed the bill following its passage in the Upper House earlier this month.
About 1,300 Japanese moved to the Dominican Republic from 1956 to 1959 after Tokyo promoted emigration to the Caribbean nation with promises of fertile land under a program to find jobs for returning soldiers and others after Japan's World War II defeat.
