Japanese horses successful in Oz
Japanese racehorse Delta Blues won Australia's most famous horse race Nov. 7, the $3.86 million Melbourne Cup, edging out stablemate Pop Rock in a historic 1-2 for Japanese-trained horses.
Delta Blues, trained by Katsuhiko Sumii and ridden by Yasunari Iwata, prevailed in a stirring finish from Damien Oliver's mount Pop Rock, also trained by Sumii, in only the ninth time one trainer has had two horses feature in the quinella in the Melbourne Cup.
It was the first Melbourne Cup to be won by a Japanese jockey in just the second year of Japanese horses running in the Cup.
Jockey Iwata could not contain his glee, shouting to a trackside reporter "very happy, very happy" later adding, "This is my biggest win ever."
