Tuna shortage to hit next year
The annual fishing quota for the southern bluefin tuna will be halved to 3,000 tons for five years beginning in 2007, from 6,065 tons in 2006, the Fisheries Agency said Oct. 16.
Japan accepted the reduction after admitting overfishing during a four-day meeting of the Commission for the Conservation of Southern Bluefin Tuna that ended Oct. 13 in Miyazaki.
Most of the southern bluefin tuna caught around the world are sold to the Japanese market. Japan annually imports roughly 10,000 tons of the fish, mostly for use in sushi or sashimi dishes.
The bluefin tuna and the southern bluefin tuna are highly popular in Japan for use in making expensive toro, fatty tuna dishes, but stocks of both fish have been rapidly shrinking due to heavy fishing.
