Japan welcomes Ban at U.N.
Japan welcomed the appointment of South Korean Foreign Minister Ban Ki-moon as the next U.N. secretary-general, a position not held by an Asian for 35 years.
Ban's appointment represents the realization of Japan's goal that the next secretary-general should come from Asia, Foreign Minister Taro Aso said.
"It is especially pleasing that the secretary-general is being selected from South Korea, a country that has embodied the remarkable development and growth that have characterized Asia over these 35 years," he said.
