Tuna conservation commission meets
The six-member Commission for the Conservation of Southern Bluefin Tuna began talks Oct. 10 in Miyazaki on whether to cut catch quotas for the fish species amid concern about its depletion.
Representatives from Australia, Japan, New Zealand, the Philippines, South Korea and Taiwan, which fish for bluefin tuna, gathered for the annual CCSBT meeting which went on until Oct. 13.
The focus of the meeting was whether the members should cut their quotas for 2007 from their combining fishing quota for 2006 of 14,030 tons.
Of the combined quota, Japan accounts for 6,065 tons and Australia 5,265 tons, and the two make up roughly 80 percent of the total catch.
Japan and Australia have criticized each other for overstepping the agreed limits.
