The future of top Japanese racehorse Deep Impact is in the balance after the triple crown holder missed out on winning the prestigious Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe event on Oct. 1.
Deep Impact finished third behind winner Rail Link and runnerup Pride after jockey Yutaka Take had pushed the favorite to the front with a furlong and a half to go, making him the likely winner under clear autumn skies at Longchamp in Paris.
Many in horse racing circles had anticipated that Deep Impact would retire to stud with a win in the Arc that would have put a priceless tag on the 4-year-old along with the unofficial title of the world's No. 1 horse. That scenario now appears to be changing.
