Aso says he will run against Abe
Foreign Minister Taro Aso formally announced Aug. 21 he will run in the Liberal-Democratic Party presidential election to replace Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi.
Aso is one of three candidates in the campaign for the Sept. 20 ballot to pick a new president for the governing party -- a position that would virtually guarantee the winner the premiership since the LDP controls the Diet.
Koizumi is stepping down when his term as LDP president expires in September.
Recent polls have portrayed Chief Cabinet Secretary Shinzo Abe as the front-runner in the race, with a comfortable lead over Aso and Finance Minister Sadakazu Tanigaki.
