The princess, who is pregnant with a possible heir to the throne, has been diagnosed with partial placenta previa, a complication in which the placenta implants itself abnormally low in the uterus and covers part of the cervix. Preparations have thus been under way for her to give birth around Sept. 6 by Caesarean section.
The princess and her expected baby are in good condition, the agency said.
If a boy is born, he will be the first heir to be born to the Imperial family in nearly 41 years, after his father Prince Akishino in November 1965.
