Aso makes surprise visit to Baghdad
Foreign Minister Taro Aso vowed Aug. 3 his country will continue to support Iraq's reconstruction despite withdrawing its humanitarian troops.
Aso, who is the first Japanese minister to visit Baghdad since the U.S.-led invasion in 2003, arrived earlier the same day on an unannounced visit.
"The Japanese government will continue to support the Iraqis in the reconstruction. Our support has entered the second phase," Aso said at a news conference with Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari.
"The Japanese support to Iraq is a kind of investment in the future relations between the two countries," Zebari said.
