Akahata sees 20,000th issue
The Japanese Communist Party's newspaper reached its 20,000th issue July 23 since its launch in February 1928, despite many obstacles over the past 78 years.
In the commemorative edition, the Shimbun Akahata, or the Red Flag, carried reportage on its front page from Guam, where U.S. troops plan to move from Okinawa.
The paper, initially called the Sekki, put out 187 issues before World War II, even though its publication was banned by the government at that time.
Revived shortly after the war, publication of the paper was temporarily suspended by the U.S. Occupation forces.
The number of its subscribers reached 3.5 million in 1980. But it dropped below 2 million by 2000, and stands at about 1.64 million today.
The decline triggered financial difficulty, and the paper has decided to close its Moscow bureau, which was established in 1960.
