Death toll climbs due to heavy rain

The death toll from floods and mudslides triggered by heavy rain late-July rose to 15 in seven prefectures, while the number of missing people came to nine in four prefectures, police said July 20.
Five people remained missing in Nagano Prefecture, where the rainfall was the hardest. Police officers, firefighters and Ground Self-Defense Force troops searched for the missing.
Heavy rain began lashing various parts of Japan on July 18, particularly in central and western areas. Deaths have been reported in Nagano, Shimane, Fukui, Okayama and Gifu Prefectures.
