Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi announced a plan June 20 to withdraw the Ground Self-Defense Force from the southern Iraq city of Samawah, ending their aid and reconstruction mission that started with a dispatch order issued in January 2004.
Defense Agency Director General Fukushiro Nukaga immediately issued a withdrawal order. The government hopes the pullout will finish by the end of July.
The Air Self-Defense Force will continue its airlift missions for multinational forces in support of Iraq reconstruction, Koizumi said.
