Kabukicho fire deathtrap to be razed
Workers May 8 began tearing down a building in Tokyo's Kabukicho entertainment district where a 2001 fire killed 44 people.
In terms of death toll, it was the fifth-worst fire in postwar history.
The demolition follows a March court-mediated agreement between Kurume Kosan, the company that owns the Myojo 56 Building, and bereaved families.
The victims were found in a third-floor mah-jongg parlor and a fourth-floor bar.
