NHK announced April 11 that it had fired Tetsushi Oshita, 43, chief producer of its sports section in Sapporo, for swindling the broadcaster out of ¥17 million by claiming expenses for fictitious business trips.
On a news program early April 12, NHK Chairman Genichi Hashimoto apologized for the incident.
NHK has suffered a string of embarrassments recently. Its head producer was indicted for embezzling ¥62 million. The network was accused of censoring, under pressure from two key lawmakers, portions of a mock tribunal that found Emperor Hirohito responsible for wartime sex slavery. Two senior officials bilked NHK out of ¥3 million in fictitious business-trip expenses. And an NHK reporter was arrested for attempted arson in Otsu, Shiga Prefecture.
