24th BSE case first in beef cow
A Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry panel confirmed March 17 the country's first case of mad cow disease in cattle specifically raised to provide meat, ministry officials said.
A 14-year-old cow among cattle bred for beef in Nagasaki Prefecture was confirmed to have been infected with the disease, said the officials.
Japan previously has confirmed 23 cases of the disease, formally known as bovine spongiform encephalopathy, the latest in a 5-year-old Holstein announced March 15, but they have involved dairy cattle.
