State ready to pay Marines to go
Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi said March 17 that the government is ready to shoulder part of the cost to relocate thousands of U.S. Marines from Okinawa to Guam as part of a U.S. military realignment plan.
Koizumi did not specify the amount but said Japan's contribution is to help relieve some of Okinawa's burden of hosting most of the 50,000 U.S. troops stationed in Japan.
Media have reported that Washington has asked Japan to cover 75 percent of the estimated $7.6 billion needed for the partial relocation of the Marines.
The unprecedented spending for another country's military would require parliamentary approval via a special law.
