Komazawa University's Tomakomai High School said March 3 that it would withdraw from this spring's national invitational baseball championship, which begins March 23, after 14 students, including baseball players, were taken into police custody for illegal drinking and smoking at a Hokkaido restaurant.
The school, known as Komadai Tomakomai, said team manager Yoshifumi Koda and a teacher in charge of the baseball team resigned over the incident. At a news conference, Katsumasa Shinohara, the principal, also expressed his intention to step down.
This is not the first time that Komadai Tomakomai has made headlines for the wrong reasons. Last year, it was revealed that a teacher overseeing its baseball team beat up a player.
