Big returns from tiny trees
Bonsai trees are usually regarded as a hobby for the elderly, but "modern bonsai," generally smaller than the conventional type, are becoming popular among young people.
Since 2004, the Shinjuku, Tokyo, branch of Isetan department store has been offering kokedama (moss ball, so called because all the roots are wrapped in moss) about 10 cm in diameter with other modern varieties. Those priced at around ¥2,500 to ¥3,800 have consistently sold well throughout the year.
