Snowfall rewrites record books
Nagoya is coated in a thick layer of snow.
Heavy snowstorms hit a wide swath across Hokkaido and Honshu, dumping some 2 meters of snow in parts of Fukui Prefecture. Nagoya received at least 23 cm of snowfall as of Dec. 19, the heaviest amount it has logged in 58 years, while 15 prefectures had seen the most snow recorded for December in some 20 years.
The cold snap and heavy snowfall, which began Dec. 11, has killed at least 15 people in five prefectures across Japan, including a 67-year-old man in Fukui Prefecture who died Dec. 18 when he fell off a roof while removing snow.
