Golden book hits silver screen
The film version of the best-selling U.S. novel Memoirs of a Geisha had its world premier in Tokyo on Nov. 29, amid concern about how the traditional courtesans are portrayed in the film.
"There are many misperceptions about what geisha are," said director Rob Marshall (Chicago). "I hope this film helps to clear that up."
Set to open in Japan on Dec. 10, the joint U.S.-Japan production is based on the novel by Arthur Golden that spent two years on the New York Times best-seller list and sold 4 million copies in English.
