Liquor union scandal widens
Hideo Seki, the 49-year-old former secretary-general of the All Japan Liquor Merchants Co-operative Association, was arrested Nov. 16 on suspicion of embezzling ¥16.5 million from its pension fund.
According to a Nov. 19 Kyodo News calculation, a political body of the union that is suspected of using its money to lobby against liquor retailing deregulation gave at least ¥210 million in political donations to major parties, including the Liberal-Democratic Party and Democratic Party of Japan, and 245 lawmakers from 2000 to 2004.
Many of the lawmakers who received the donations have opposed the deregulation, indicating the union used huge amounts of money for political machinations.
