16-year-old arrested for killing

Police investigate a Machida apartment in Tokyo on Nov. 12, where a 15-year-old high-school student was stabbed to death by a 16-year-old boy.
Police arrested a 16-year-old boy Nov. 12 on suspicion of killing Yua Koyama, 15, who attended the same high school. She was found stabbed to death by her mother, Kimiko, 39, around 5:30 a.m. on Nov. 11 in her apartment in Machida, Tokyo, police officials said.

The boy, whose name is being withheld because he is a minor, has admitted to stabbing the girl to death. She had about 50 stab wounds.

An autopsy showed that the girl died due to loss of blood stemming from the neck wound. The autopsy also showed that her bronchial tube had been severed.

The boy was quoted as telling investigators that although he and Koyama had been classmates during elementary and junior high-school years, Koyama started treating him coldly after they entered high school, referring to the apparent motive for the killing.

Although his school uniform blazer had been stained by the girl's blood, he told his mother that the blood came from wound of his own, which he said happened in a fall while riding his bicycle, the police officials said.

A man living in an apartment below said he heard a woman screaming for help and the sound of a thud the evening of Nov. 10.
