Russian implicated in espionage
The Metropolitan Police Department sent papers to prosecutors Oct. 20 regarding a former employee of a Toshiba Corp. subsidiary on a charge of breach of trust for allegedly providing information to an official from the Russian Trade Representation and receiving about ¥1 million in payment, as well as relating to the Russian man on a charge of conspiracy.
It is the fifth instance since 1989 in which the police have exposed cases related to spying activities involving members of the Russian trade representative office. The MPD believes the Russian has links to Russia's Foreign Intelligence Service, known by the Russian acronym SVR.
According to the police, the 30-year-old former employee became acquainted with the Russian at a Tokyo electrical equipment exhibition in spring 2004. While still working at the subsidiary he allegedly contacted the Russian nine times between September 2004 and May this year, providing him with information containing data on semiconductor-related technology that has applications in submarine and fighter aircraft radar as well as missile guidance systems.
The Russian man, who left in June, identified himself to the former employee as an Italian consultant. The Russian Embassy in Tokyo declined to comment on the case.
