11 hospitals receive bomb threats
Eleven university hospitals in Tokyo received letters at the beginning of September saying they would be bombed within 45 days, police said Sept. 5.
No suspicious objects have been found at the hospitals.
The threats came as police have stepped up security in Tokyo due to terrorism fears in the lead-up to the Sept. 11 Lower House election.
The 11 institutions include the University of Tokyo Hospital and Tokyo Medical and Dental University Hospital, both in Bunkyo Ward, and Keio University Hospital in Shinjuku Ward.
According to investigators, the letters, sent by mail to the universities' departments of medicine, said, "Large-scale terrorist attacks will be carried out in 45 days unless the enrollment limit for the (university's) department of medicine is doubled for the next academic year."
