Iraq has formally requested that Japan extend the mission of the Self-Defense Forces involved in reconstruction assistance there beyond the December deadline, Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi said Aug. 29.
A document in which Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari made the request to Foreign Minister Nobutaka Machimura arrived Aug. 22, a ministry source said.
The current one-year plan for the SDF mission to the southern Iraqi city of Samawah ends in mid-December. About 500 ground troops are engaged in rebuilding infrastructure in the city.
